Holiday Fire Prevention Tips

FACT: According to the United States Fire Administration, kids start nearly 100,000 fires a year. Fires hurt and kill people and cause property damage. Kids should not play with fire, candles, lighters, or matches.

FACT: During the Christmas Holidays which typically runs from December 24th through the 26th, fire deaths, property loss, and injuries increase dramatically. The use of candles contributes to the increase in holiday fires.

  1. Select a freshly cut green tree. The needles should not break and the trunk should be sticky to the touch. An old tree can be identified by bouncing it on the ground. If the needles fall off the tree is probably dried out and presents a severe fire hazard.
  2. Keep your tree stand filled with water at all times. Do not place the tree near a heat source, i.e. heater, fireplace. This will cause the tree to dry out, making your tree easier to ignite. Do not put up your tree to early or leave it up longer than two weeks.
  3. Mever dispose of your tree by putting branches or needles in a fireplace or woodburning stove. Dispose of your tree promptly by taking it to a recycling center or have it hauled away by your local community pickup program.
