- Replace batteries at least once a year. Pick a date such as your birthday
or holiday and replace the battery each year on that date. Always use
new batteries when replacing old ones.
- Keep your smoke detector clean and free of dust and debris. Debris
can interfere with the proper operation of your detector.
- Never disable your smoke detector if it alarms while cooking. Simply
clear the air by waving a towel near the alarm. The alarm may have to
be moved to a new location.
- If your smoke detector is "hard wired" (connected to the
household electrical system) it may not have a battery back-up. Therefore,
it is important to test your smoke detectors once a month for proper
operation.
