Smoke Detector Maintenance

  1. Replace batteries at least once a year. Pick a date such as your birthday or holiday and replace the battery each year on that date. Always use new batteries when replacing old ones.
  2. Keep your smoke detector clean and free of dust and debris. Debris can interfere with the proper operation of your detector.
  3. Never disable your smoke detector if it alarms while cooking. Simply clear the air by waving a towel near the alarm. The alarm may have to be moved to a new location.
  4. If your smoke detector is "hard wired" (connected to the household electrical system) it may not have a battery back-up. Therefore, it is important to test your smoke detectors once a month for proper operation.
